Authentic Hong Kong breakfast in heartland Toa Payoh ... Gen Shu Good Food 根叔美食世家

It's quite difficult to find good authentic Hong Kong style breakfast in Singapore but we found one right inside heartland Toa Payoh. HY is a Cantonese who has a taste buds most loyal to her ethnic roots. Promise of a good enough Hong Kong style congee and fried noodles would be reason enough  to get her out of cosy dreamland and make the distance. We were right inside Bllk 74 Toa Payoh Lorong 4, Toa Payoh Vista Market, where we had our Hong Kong style breakfast at Gen Shu's (根叔美食世家) stall. It was right here that we savored one of the most authentic Hong Kong style congee and fried noodle available in Singapore.

Hong Kong style congee over here is smooth and very generous with the meat. Of course there can there's pork or chicken that can be added into the congee.

Hong Style Fried Noodles in the form of Bean Sauce Cha Siew Fried Noodles was served at Gen Shu's stall. This noodle is typical Hong Kong style unlike the thicker yellow noodles used in many other hawker stalls serving fried noodles.

Cantonese style porcelain ware 盅  that's round and tall is typically used for double boiled soup. It's also used for Cantonese steamed rice 盅仔饭 where steamed white rice is placed at the base and different ingredients are used as toppings.  Here's my Steamed Chicken Rice with Salted Fish and Chinese Sausage. There are several other different varieties of steamed rice at Gen Shu to whet your appetite.

One of the best yam cake we have definitely belongs here with Gen Shu. We tried it without sweet sauce but with a drizzle of light soy sauce. Sweet sauce tends to mask the yam taste. Without it, the fragrance of the yam becomes more pronounced. The yam cake here's soft and moist and therefore .... yummy.

Here's Gen Shu's stall inside Toa Payoh Vista market.
