United Food Bank in Mesa this week got good news on two fronts in the form of $30,000 from Fry's Food Stores for the supermarket chain's Bringing Hope to the Table campaign and 2,500 8-ounce servings of milk from Shamrock Farms. The donations come at a time when higher demand and traditionally low summer inventories have put a strain on most food banks in the Valley.
FRY'S DONATION
"Bringing Hope to the Table" is a nationwide effort by Kroger to support local food banks and has generated $18 million in cash and $7 million in food for more than 80 food banks across the country since 2006, United Food Bank said in a release. United President/CEO Bob Evans said: "At this time of the year, their help is critical. Already struggling families are forced to stretch their budget even further with school out and utility bills up. We need help to keep up with that need, and the support of Fry's helps us do that."
SHAMROCK GIFT
Shamrock Farms' donation helps boost United Food Bank with its preparation of 9,000 snack packs a week for needy children. The company said the donation is part of an effort to teach people about the importance of milk as part of a balanced breakfast.
