Penang Hawkers' Fare at York Hotel ... simply authentic since 1986

From the 14th December 2013 to 1 January 2013, York Hotels brings in the authentic Penang Hawkers' Fare. The Penang hawkers are flown in to cook up a storm of Penang's best street food inside the hotel's White Rose Cafe.

Lunch - 12noon to 2.30pm
Dinner - 6.30pm to 10pm

Our Eat Eat Eat Group had a gathering to buy Chris a birthday meal. Here's showing what's available. We were out on a stampede with second and third servings of each dish.

Ban Chang Kueh - This is like out peanut cake that's mostly crispy and had a sprinkle of peanut inside. The queue seems to be the slowest as the time taken to cook this dish is a bit long.

Cuttle Fish with Kang Kong - This is a simple dish but the stall's special sauce, a mix of three types made it savory and sweet at the same time.

Lor Bak - This is an assortment of items like, shrimps, beancurd, sweet potatoe, and yam, deep fried in batter and then drizzled over with braised sauce.

Prawn Noodles - This is not unlike the type we have in Singapore but delicious nevertheless.

Penang Rojak - A mix fruit salad that's mixed up in prawn paste sauce and then sprinkled with bits of ground peanuts.

Penang Char Kway Teow -  The difference with our Singaporean char kway teow is the use of thinner kway teow and the dish do not have the sweet sauce that we have in ours. This stall has one of the longest queue in the hawkers' fare.

Fish Ball Noodle Soup -  Light clear tasty soup and springy fish balls. This was simplicity at it's best.

Penang Laksa - The minced sardines in the gravy gave it the seafood characteristic with a slight sourish taste from the asam.

Oyster Omelette - I thought this would have tasted better if it's served right out of the wok. In the hawkers' fare, this dish was served out of a food warmer which takes out the wok hei.

Cendol - This Penang iced dessert is drizzled with thick coconut milk and gula melaka. There's also the ice kacang served at the same stall which I didn't photograph.

Jade's Dim Sum Buffet, chi-chi dining that didn't burn a hole in the pocket.

After this Sunday's lunch, celebrating my father-in-law's birthday and belated father's day all at one go, I thought Jade's Dim Sum buffet worth recommending.

At S$33+++ per pax, Jade provides six pages of dim sum and some a la carte food to choose. On top of that the chi-chi dining inside The Fullerton Hotel, a fragment of Singapore's colonial past.

The standard "Har Gao", Steamed Crystal Shrimp Dumpling

and the not so standard Steamed Abalone Siew Mai.

The soft but not gooey Pan Fried Radish Cake

Roasted Pork Belly with Five Spices and Sea Salt
The serving wasn't enough for us pork lovers. We had to order 3 servings.

Braised Shark's Fin with Crabmeat, Truffle, Egg White in Chicken Broth.
This soup was quite enjoyable especially with the flavors of truffle.

Deep Fried Taro Paste wrapped with Truffle and Mushroom
This deep fried taro was very smooth. I had at least two of these.

See that smooth taro in there?

Deep Fried Prawns coated with Wasabi Mayonnaise
Just not as much punch as the ones from Peach Garden and The Majestic.

Deep Fried Golden Cheese Dumpling
If there's a word called "twangy". I think it's the best word to describe this dumpling. When you bite and pull at the dough, it can go 'TWANNNNGGG'. Very chewy, elastic and yummy.

Crispy Beancurd with Chilli Fragrant Salt
Not too bad but the chilli fragrant salt wasn't mixed uniformly.

Steamed Pork Rib with Black Bean Sauce
I had to order a second helping. This pork rib was the most tender one I have eaten.

Poached Shrimp Wanton with Chilli Vinegar Dressing
The wanton was poached perfectly and the dressing complimented well with the wanton.

Oven Baked Egg Tarts
Doesn't look delicious but it definitely was.

Bite pass the crust, the egg custard became runny.

Stewed Beef Brisket with Bean Sauce
The beef brisket was too good, my FIL finished almost all the brisket. It's one of his favorite dish. Very tender.

Crispy Chicken with Dried Chilli and Spiced Fragrant Salt
This dish tasted good initially but after chewing, the chicken seems to be under-marinated.

Crispy Honey Vinaigrette Sliced Sea Bass
Tasted like the sweetened fried satay fish titbit that you buy in a packet.

Steamed Custard Bun
The custard bun that wasn't flowing like we expected.

Peanut Paste with Mochi Ball wrapped with black sesame
Quite like the peanut paste. Not too sweet. I think the peanut paste was smoothen with some milk.

京華 Jing @ One Fullerton .......... for Weekend A-la-carte Buffet Brunch

Having tried Chef Yong's food at Majestic, it's hard to resist visiting 京華 Jing. HY's crave for dim sum brought us there for the restaurant's Weekend A-la-carte Brunch Buffet. There is no stopping me when the buffet food is good. This day, my flood gates were opened, gluttony almost took over until I realized that everyone at my table had stopped eating the savory food and have proceeded with desert.

The outdoor area dining area with a potential world class bay view. There's too much construction going on at the Integrated Resorts site right now for any view so to speak.

Don't Singaporeans love their buffets? The place is filled!

As for the buffet brunch items, we definitely ate more items than I show below. However, I've captured the good ones that I liked. This time I'm not gonna do a lot of description. I'll let the food do the talking.

笋尖虾饺 Steamed Fresh Prawn Dumplings with Bamboo Shoot

鱼子蒸烧卖 Steam Pork Siew Mai with Fish Roe

紫菜腐皮卷 Deep fried Bean Curd Rolls with Prawns and Pork

沙律明虾角 Crisp-fried Prawn Dumplings

鲍鱼水晶包 Steamed Crystal Abalone Dumplings

香稣鸭 Marinated Crispy duck

白灼生虾 Poached Fresh Prawn

XO 酱萝卜糕 XO Chilli Sauce Carrot Cake

东瀛芥茉虾 Signature Wasabi Prawns

辣椒炒蟹 Chilli Crab

黄焖蟹肉鱼鳔羹Fish Maw with Crab Meat Soup

鱼片粥 Congee with Sliced Fish

Fried Durian Cream - This is not on the menu.

Durian cream oozing out of the fried batter.

杨枝甘露 Cream of Mango Sago with Pomelo

It's definitely one of the better Chinese buffets you can find for S$36++.

Cost : Weekend A-la-carte Brunch Buffet, S$36 per adult and S$18 per child (4 ~ 12 years old)

Address : 1 Fullerton Road #01-02/03

Yan Ting 宴庭 .......... Dim Sum Buffet in a St. Regis Chinese Restaurant

Only a couple of hours after my wife and I completed 10km run in the Singapore SC Marathon, we were sitting inside Yan Ting 宴庭 to "heal" our body.

After hearing many people talk about the Dim Sum in Yan Ting, we decide to visit the restaurant with my mother-in-law for her birthday celebration.

The interior of Yan Ting. Comfortable lights .... Full back cushion seats ..........

There's quite a good variety to choose from the menu. I would recommend the following dishes to whet your appetite.

How can we have dim sum without Siew Mai ..........

and Har Gao ..........

The Slow-Cooked Pork Belly with Man Tou is good. The belly meat is tender and the fats melts in your mouth. It's nice that this dish comes in a small portion ..........

These are not carrots. They are Man Tou, bread sticks to go with the pork belly's sauce ..........

Szechuan Style Steamed Scallop with Bean Curd ..........

Crispy Roasted Duck in Taro Crust ..........

Wok-Baked Lobster with Spring Onion. This dish is served to every one on the table. there's no need to order ..........

The "lonely" Wok-Baked Prawn in Garlic Butter on my plate ..........

Deep Fred Prawns in Wasabi Mayonnaise. It's quite good but not the best I've eaten in Singapore ..........

Sauteed Prawns with XO sauce. I think this prawn dish is better than the Wasabi prawn here ........

Here's that little bit of vegetable. Some Broccoli with Crab Meat ..........

Only interesting desert I see. Chinese Marshmellows ..........

Overall, the food here is good , but I suggest that you go some where else for desert.

Cost : S$68++ per person (S$98++ per person if you'll like to down some champagne with the food)

Address : 29 Tanglin Road, The St. Regis
