Street Food in Phuket

Apart from the restaurants that we crashed, we haven't really ate much street food in Phuket until one evening we spotted a little cluster of street food stalls at Patong beach. Lunch at Kan Eang @ pier was too filling so we had something light at the noodle soup stall.

Noodle Soup
Thai noodles cooked with radish pork balls and
"cha siew". The soup was light but sweet.

Noodle Soup with pork
The pork meat provided with the noodles were from pig trotters
where the meat was stewed till an utmost tenderness. HY was
stealing some from my bowl of noodle soup with pork.

Sweet Coconut and Corn Dessert
These 8 pieces of dessert was all wiped out in matter
of minutes even when everyone claimed that they were full.

I haven't been doing enough research to track down the street food in Phuket. So, there was no one else other than myself to blame for missing out on more Phuket street food. There must be more street food in Phuket than these!

Seafood extravaganza in Kan Eang @ Pier, Phuket

There was no missing Kan Eang @ Pier when we hit down the right street. The modernistic red sign board stood out among the establishments (if we noticed any other establishments) around the area. We came prepared to splurge as this this seafood place was recommended by the Luxe guide. However, it turned out that the food, ambience and of course, our company of friends made it all worth the money spent.

Dining area of Kan Eang @ pier
We only observed alfresco dining in the area. The only air conditioned
section was what seemed like a lounge bar in a thatched roof, glass
wall, hut right at the backbround of the photo.

This was the quaint, relaxed Kan Eang pier view right at
our sides while we take our time to eat our seafood lunch.

Pier Basket
The ingredients in the basket were dates, carrots, chestnuts,
chicken, cashew nuts and peppers all pan fried into
this colorful mix. This is one of the signature appetizer dish
that the restaurant has to offer.

Grilled Pork Belly
If any one followed my food diary, it wouldn't take long to notice
my inclination to pork belly. For a seafood place, this dish was
atrociously delicious. Oink!

Grouper in lime and tamarind sauce
In Phuket, we can't get enough of lime and tamarind. Every seafood
restaurant we went would recommend fresh fish to be cooked this way.
Extra sauce/soup at the side was standard procedure.

Grilled Giant Tiger Prawns
These crustaceans were a hot topic in Singapore for being over priced
and some people claimed they were "ripped off". These prawns weren't cheap
in Phuket but definitely much cheaper and fresher than those we eat in
Singapore. How can we not have some of these!

Our Medium sized Lobster
Our 1.5kg catch, a live lobster from one of the tanks that housed
medium sized live lobsters. the big ones should be at least 2kg.

Lobster Thermidor
One half of the this creature was transformed into a lobster thermidor.
The lobster meat was mixed into this cheesy creamy sauce that we thought was
too filling considering the many other dishes we had before this finale dish.

Garlic and Butter Lobster
This half of the lobster was more receptive to everyone. Even if we burp,
it had to be a controlled gentle burp, else we'll do a "merlion" in Phuket.
We should have suggested a lobster sashimi to taste the
real sweet tenderness of this shelled crustacean.

Thai Chilli Dip
I can't help but to compliment this dip sauce that made this
meal so appetizing. It really went well with seafood.

No sea side meal would be complete without
the cooling fresh coconut juice.

If you ever been to Bali, Indonesia, and "enticed" into the seafood restaurants along Jimbaran Bay, do not fret. Kan Eang @ Pier was definitely not the place where you will drop your dough and left unsatisfied. We had our fill for lunch and most part of dinner. Nobody in the group hinted any serious dinner after this. Burp!

Lunch @ the Royal Phuket Yacht Club, Paravarna in South Phuket

As we were basking in Nai Harn beach for sometime, we saw some menacing dark clouds started to form and approach the beach in double quick time. So its pack up and go time! While we seek solace in the car, we decided to just have a simple lunch in the nearest resort, The Royak Phuket Yacht Club. I wonder if it's the hunger that struck us after swimming and sun bathing, but the food was quite decent. That was quite contrary to the number of people feasting in the restaurant. There was only us and another table when we were about to leave. The menu was not extensive but it has a variety of local thai, some easy western dishes and some salads, more like cafe food actually.

What we really liked about the restaurant was its location. It was located at one end of Nai Harn beach, up on a little rock outcrop, overlooking the whole of Nai Harn beach and Prompthep Cape.

Club Sandwich
The toast was not marshy, with that slight crisp and the ingredients
sandwiched in between were generous

Pad Thai (Thai Fried Vermicelli)
The pad thai was as good as it looked. Everyone was impatiently
waiting to grab at it while I was taking shots of this dish.

Tom Yam Goong (Thai Spicy Seafood Soup)
The tom yam goong was delicious but I would like
it better if they served it more spicy.

Assorted Sate (Satay)
Chicken, pork and beef. The marinating of the meat wasn't as rich
as I would like. The pieces were quite chunky but tender though.

A view from the restaurant at the Royal Phuket Yacht Club
overlooking the Nai Harn beach (one of the best
swimming beaches in Phuket) and the Prompthep Cape.

Mom Tri's Boathouse Wine & Grill @ Kata Beach, Phuket

How can we not visit the Mom Tri's Boat House after we've been pestering Ade for this French-Thai fine dining place in Phuket that she was raving about. The Mom Tri's Boat House is located at Kata beach, facing the Andaman Sea. So, it's definitely a popular place for enjoying dinner and wine with the Andaman sunset. When we were there, all of us had the same observation. We were the only Asians in the restaurant and were among the most under-dressed list, still in our T-shirts, sandals and (almost dried) beach berms.

Our Phuket holiday was so packed with back to back activities like shopping, spa trips and beach bumming that we had to have dinner at 8.30pm, where the sun had long gone, hidden beneath the horizon. To enjoy dinner at Mom Tri's, book a table in the evening for that romantic dinner with that special other half. We were all with our special other halves though, but we all seemed to be way pass that dinner with the sunset thingy and went straight for the food. We were hungry after being beaten up by the Andaman waves at Pansea beach.

Here's some dishes that I thought was good.

Complimentary cheese and vegetable soup
We were all given complimentary soup which went well
with the breads and this cheesy soup went well wth cheesy me.

Deep Fried Seafood Cakes
served with sweet chilli sauce and plum sauce
This thai appetiser seems to be the 'must try' for every meal
we had. It must be the fresh local seafood and the appetizing
sauces that made this dish so appealing.

Rock Lobster Crispy Hebs and Tamarind Sauce
corriander, spring onion and lettuce garnish
Both W and I liked this appetizer. This salad is refreshing
with the tamarind sauce on the greens. The chinks of natural
sweet rock lobster added that contrasting taste.

Grilled Australian lamb chops, vegetable
Proven
çale rosemary sauce
The lamb chops were by default medium rare and were tasty and
juicy enough. The taste didn't really raised our eye brows though.

Grilled Pork chop Flavoured with
Proven
çale rosemary sauce, crush potatoes, virgin olive oil
We all thought HY's choice of mains was the best grill on the table. The pork
chop was grilled and went well with the rosemary sauce. Every one of us liked it.

Crêpe with mango and vanilla ice cream

An interesting mix of 3 scoops and ice cream and sherbet
Coconut, Passion Fruit and Chocolate

There's a list of ice cream and sherbets to choose from.

The Boat House was known for their outstanding wine list. So it has to be one of the restaurant to visit for that wine lover.

The service at the restaurant was good and my only regret was not having a big enough appetite to try their Thai main dishes other than the grills that we had.

Cost : About 6800 That baht for 4 people without wine.

Laem Hin Seafood ........ @ Laem Hin Pier, Phuket

Before heading to Phuket, I was tasked to spearhead our trip's research on Phuket's food. Jamie's Phuket Blog came into the picture as I did the search on the internet. Jamie's recommendations for Laem Hin Seafood was indeed as described in his blog write up. The seafood was fresh and very affordable. When we arrived at the restaurant at about 930pm, there was hardly any people. We only realized later that at that part of Phuket, night life wasn't too vibrant and people usually have early dinner. Like Jamie said in his blog, the seafood restaurant was patronized by many locals. Last order was around 10pm. When we finished our food, we don't see any waitresses around anymore. They have left home in the restaurant provided transport. Going back to our resort was a breeze as our resort was on (The Village) Coconut Island which happened to be right across the Laem Hin pier where we had our 24 hours speedboat ferry service.

As it was the first proper meal since arriving at Phuket, we did not eat anything exotic just some local crabs, white snapper, crab cakes and prawns. Even though the meal was simple, every one thought it was good. So good such that I was having such a good time taking the crabs apart that I've forgotten to capture the crabs on a photo.

So apart from the following dishes the black pepper crab was great! The sauce for the crab taste like kung pao sauce but with lots of black pepper.

Deep Fried Crab Cakes
The crab cakes were a delight especially when accompanied
with the sweet and sour sauce at the side. The crab meat was sweet
even when eaten without the sauce. Thumbs up from everyone.

Sweet and Sour Prawns
All we noted that the prawns were fresh. Overall, the
dish taste alright. Nothing too special.

White Snapper with lime and tamarind sauce
This dish was the highlight. The white snapper laid inside a fish
shaped metal dish over charcoal fire. Half the fish was submerged
in the lime and tamarind sauce, or rather, soup. The light sauce,
apart from being rather spicy, was good enough to be drunk as soup.
An extra bowl of the sauce was provided for us just in case the fish got dried
up from the charcoal heat. In our instance, the extra bowl of sauce was needed
as we treat the sauce like soup. Great appetizing dish.

Does it look like everyone's getting enthusiatic over this dish?
